Fundamentals of self-leadership

Individuals As Leaders Course

This interactive one-day workshop aims to empower you to recognise and cultivate your medical leadership potential. Through facilitated interactive discussions and practical activities, the workshop will help you to explore your personal leadership style and how to develop as an authentic leader.

For those new to medical leadership roles, we will explore ways of dealing with the demands of life as an early career leader in the NHS, supporting you in the development of practical leadership skills and a personal leadership development plan.

This workshop forms part of the Leadership Series and contributes towards the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº Doctors as Leaders accreditation. To gain the accreditation, you simply need to attend this workshop and the Fundamentals of Leading Others workshop.

What will you learn?

This 1-day workshop will help learners to:

  • discuss the value of clinical leadership and investigate the relationship between leadership and management
  • develop a clear understanding of how to develop as a leader, using different leadership theory and models
  • debate the roles power and influence play in leadership
  • examine the importance of emotional intelligence and knowing your values
  • discuss the importance of feedback and self-reflection
  • develop self-leadership strategies to protect yourself
  • apply what you have learnt to solve problems, and use that knowledge to directly influence your leadership practice
  • identify steps for further continuous leadership development.

This workshop is approved for 6 external CPD credits.

This workshop is primarily aimed at resident doctors of all specialties (ST1-ST7) and SAS doctors of equivalent experience. It would also be beneficial for those who are new to leadership roles, or those with no prior leadership training.

Consultants and SAS doctors of equivalent experience may attend, generally benefitting a refresher course or if they have not attended any previous leadership training.

Alternatively, there are two workshops that are more appropriate for consultants and equivalent SAS doctors:

The ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº provides ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº accreditation for several of our established programmes and also extends the opportunity to learners on commissioned and bespoke programmes.

The format for achieving ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº accreditation is to participate in the workshop(s) or programme and then submit a short reflective assignment for review by a member of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº faculty.

There is no need to apply separately for the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº accreditation, simply book onto the relevant workshop(s) or programmes in order to be automatically enrolled for the accreditation.

  • ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº educational supervisor accreditation (linked with the Educational supervisor workshop)

  • ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº emerging women leaders accreditation (linked with the Emerging women leaders programme)
