ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº

Our role in shaping health policy

‘Influencing the way that healthcare is designed and delivered’ is one of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº's three key strategic aims. The ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº works toward this aim by engaging with the government, the NHS, our royal college partners and others.

Since 2018, the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº has used policy and campaigns priorities, chosen in consultation with ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº members and endorsed by ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº Council, to guide and shape our external influencing work in the UK. Given the complexity of health and healthcare, and the ÄÛ²ÝӰԺ’s mission, this helps us strategically focus on key challenges.Ìý

These campaigning priorities are being refreshed as part of the ÄÛ²ÝӰԺ’s new organisational strategy in 2026.

We work on policy and campaigns in England and Wales. As part of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº Federation, we also work with the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº in Edinburgh and the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº and Surgeons in Glasgow.

Our policy and campaigns work ensures that the voice of physicians is heard by decision makers. We have various ways of gathering member views to inform policy reports, consultation responses, briefings and policy blogs. Throughout its over-500-year history, the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº has played a pivotal role in shaping public health – this continues today with the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº publishing authoritative reports on topics such as tobacco and air quality.

Our recent member snapshot survey helped us to highlight the reality of corridor care, andÌýphysicians seeing more patients with health inequalitiesÌýin their work. Members can also participate in the annual Focus on Physicians survey and get involved in the ÄÛ²ÝӰԺ’sÌýcommittees.

We always encourage members contacting us atÌýpolicy@rcp.ac.ukÌýto raise and discuss issues that they are currently facing or considering when it comes to the delivery of healthcare. At the moment, we are especially interested in hearing about issues affecting the NHS workforce,ÌýÌýin your patients, delivery of clinical research andÌý.

Working with government

To represent the views of our members we brief MPs and Peers on the ÄÛ²ÝӰԺ’s positions across our policy and campaigns priorities. The ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº also responds to many consultations each year issued by the UK government, health regulators and arm's length bodies.

If you are a Parliamentary staffer, MP or Peer and want to find out more about the ÄÛ²ÝӰԺ’s views and how the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº can support you in your work, please contactÌýpolicy@rcp.ac.uk, or read ourÌý.
