On-the-job teaching: practical skills for everyday clinical education

This 1-day clinical teaching workshop is part of our teach-the-teacher series, designed specifically for doctors involved in postgraduate medical education. Focused on on-the-job teaching, the workshop equips participants with effective teaching techniques to use during ward rounds, clinics, and other clinical settings.鈥 

Whether you're new to teaching or looking to refine your approach, this training offers practical strategies to strengthen your teaching skills as a clinician. By the end of this workshop, you鈥檒l be better prepared to support learners and contribute meaningfully as a doctor educator in the workplace.鈥

What will I learn?

This workshop provides practical suggestions on how to鈥maximise learning opportunities鈥痑nd become a more effective teacher. By identifying techniques for teaching knowledge, clinical skills and professional behaviour, you will learn how to successfully incorporate teaching sessions into all clinical commitments:

  • Take a deep dive into the many faces of clinical practice to identify practical steps you can take tomorrow to introduce teaching throughout your day and identify tasks which can be turned into teachable moments, rather than lengthening your jobs list 
  • You will learn theory and structures that enable you to deliver high quality teaching, in just a couple of minutes 
  • You will learn how to create an environment for learning in a busy clinical setting, considering inclusivity and the needs of your learners 
  • This workshop looks beyond standard lessons to discuss how you teach the hidden curriculum, including skills such as professionalism, efficiency, prioritisation and delegation 
  • You will learn how to teach through effective questioning, and how saying less, can achieve more when it comes to learning on the job, including differentiating between learners of different levels 
  • Move past feedback forms and appreciate the different ways to evaluate your teaching, along with making your own theory-based action plan to develop yourself as a medical educator 
  • During the session you will have an opportunity to put what you have learned into practice, so you leave they day already seeing an improvement and ready to hit the ground running.
