Meet your president - SAS week 2026
As part of SAS Week 2026, this special event brings together the presidents of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for an open and timely conversation on how we better support and advocate for SAS doctors.
This is an opportunity to hear directly from senior leaders, and, crucially, to share your experiences, perspectives and priorities as an SAS doctor working in the UK.
The discussion will be chaired by Dr Eman Toeima, SAS lead at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

This session will focus on the experience and priorities of SAS doctors in the UK. Those working closely with SAS doctors are also very welcome to attend. You do not need to be an ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº member or fellow to join.
Dr Eman Toeima, SAS lead at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
Eman has 35 years of experience in clinical practice. She has built up an extensive portfolio working in numerous countries including Qatar, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Canada before settling in the UK.
Through the CESR pathway (now the portfolio pathway) Eman has been on the GMC specialist register since 2015, and works as specialist gynaecologist at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust. Eman is national lead for SAS and locally employed (LE) doctors at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and chair of AoMRC SAS committee. She previously worked as chair for British Society for Study of Vulval Disease (BSSVD), and as deputy chair for the Portfolio Pathway Advice committee at RCOG. She is currently SAS tutor and co-chair the disability awareness staff network in her Trust.
Professor Mumtaz Patel, president, ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº
Dr Patel is a consultant nephrologist based in Manchester and was elected president of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº in April 2025. Before this she was vice president for education and training, global vice president and held various educational roles including training programme director and ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº regional adviser. She is an NHS England postgraduate associate dean in the north-west and has established a strong track record in education, training, assessment and research. She has designed and delivered several educational and leadership courses in the UK and internationally and is actively involved in assessment as an experienced PACES examiner.
Professor Subodh Dave, president, Royal College of Psychiatrists
Professor Subodh Dave is a consultant liaison psychiatrist at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and professor at University of Greater Manchester. He holds leadership positions in healthcare, community transformation initiatives and medical education with internationally recognised innovative training programs, culminating in recognition as a rising star in the Health Service Journal list of most influential BAME leaders in healthcare. He is an accomplished marathoner and trustee of doctors.
Dr Clare McNaught, president, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
Professor Clare McNaught is the president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a consultant general and colorectal surgeon at Harrogate District General Hospital.
Clare graduated from Aberdeen University in 1996 and completed her higher surgical training in Yorkshire. During this time, she was awarded an MD for her research into the impact of probiotics on gut function and aspects of enhanced recovery after surgery. She was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2008. Her clinical interests include colorectal cancer, IBD and the impact of frailty on surgical outcomes. She has always been passionate about training and supporting the next generation of surgeons through her roles as educational supervisor, research mentor and MRCS examiner. In 2014, Clare founded the Younger Fellows' Committee to support surgeons in their transition from registrar to consultant practice. She is also the past editor of Surgeons' News. Clare was elected to RCSEd council in 2014, was honorary secretary from 2020-2022 and vice president from 2022-2025. She was elected to the office of president in 2025, the first woman to hold this role since 1505.
