The elections also saw newly-elected joint vice presidents for Wales take up the role and ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº president Professor Mumtaz Patel re-elected by fellows in an uncontested election.
In a closely run contest, Dr Dan Furmedge has been elected as senior censor and vice president for education and training (VPET) of the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº.
Dr Dan Furmedge MSc FÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº FEFIM FHEA DLM DRCOG AKC is a consultant physician in geriatric and internal medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. With experience as a clinical leader, college tutor, training programme director, textbook author, PACES examiner and ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº censor, Dr Furmedge brings a wealth of experience to the role.
A total of 5,872 votes were cast for the senior censor and vice president for education and training, with a turnout of 23.5% across this year’s ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº elections. Dr Furmedge received 2,671 votes with a margin of 27to the runner-up candidate.
Dr Furmedge will begin in the role as soon as possible, and the tenure of the post is a minimum of 2 years with a maximum end date of 31 July 2029.
Dr Dan Furmedge said:
'I am proud and excited to be elected vice president for education and training at a time of opportunity with significant upcoming national training and education reform.
'I am particularly enthusiastic to advocate and provide a voice for doctors at this time of change whilst ensuring that ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº is relevant, representative and valuable for physicians at all stages of their careers from medical student, through postgraduate training and consultant career to retirement.'

Voting was open between 2 March and 30 March 2026. The elections were supported independently by Civica Election Services (CES) and conducted using the single transferable vote electoral system. As previously announced Professor Sam Rice and Dr Ben Thomas, have been elected as joint vice president for Wales. They have now formally taken up the role with a maximum end date of 31 July 2029.
Professor Sam Rice MBBCH FÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº PhD is a consultant physician and endocrinologist, Hywel Dda & Swansea Bay University Health Boards. Professor Rice has been a consultant for more than 16 years, working across all hospitals in South West Wales. He was appointed as the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº regional adviser for South West Wales in 2020 and believes physicians have a responsibility to lead, teach, support their teams and champion their specialities.
Dr Ben Thomas MBBCH FÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº LLM is a consultant physician and nephrologist at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Dr Thomas contributes regularly to national and local teaching programmes on consent and end-of-life decision-making. He was appointed as the ÄÛ²ÝÓ°Ôº regional adviser for North Wales in 2022, taking an active role in improving the training and working experiences of clinicians across the region.

As required by section 6 of the Medical Act 1860, the annual election of the president was held on Monday 30 March 2026 - as part of College Day.
Professor Mumtaz Patel was the only fellow nominated and was re-elected as president by fellows in the uncontested election.
